Michelin-starred Lake District restaurant up for sale with £1.25m price tag

A Michelin-starred Lake District restaurant has been put up for sale with a £1.25m price tag.

The Cottage in the Woods is located in Whinlatter Forest, near Braithwaite, and also includes nine bedrooms.

Its Michelin star was first awarded in 2019 and is led by head chef Sam Miller.

Mr Miller replaced Ben Wilkinson in August 2022 after he moved to Pass at South Lodge in Sussex.

The restaurant, which is based in a 17th century coaching inn, had previously been up for sale last year for £1.1m.

The business has been run by Kath and Liam Berney who bought it in 2002.

A Christie & Co statement, posted on the Rightmove listing, said: “The property is a very successful business however, there is a significant opportunity to increase revenue further should a new owner choose to do so.

“The restaurant opening hours could be extended with relative ease, in particular the lucrative Sunday service, whilst the bedrooms would also be available to paying guests to maximise further revenue.“There would also be scope to consider how best to make use of the land with options available such as luxury lodges and hot tubs taking advantage of the fell views, subject to all the necessary planning consent being sought.”
