A popular Newcastle riverside pub and brewery has gone on the market as the owners look to retire – and it’s the second time it’s gone up for sale.
The Keelman & Big Lamp Brewery in Newburn was first put up for sale six years but the two businessman behind the venture ultimately changed their minds and decided to keep running the well known bar and brewery. Now, however, the semi-retired pair are keen to step away, and watch new owners take on the business. Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has been enlisted to find a buyer for the property, which is on the market for £995,000. It could also be made available for rent.
The pub and restaurant is based in the Tyne Riverside Country Park on the banks of the River Tyne at Newburn, around six miles from Newcastle city centre, and was named after the River Tyne boatmen of yesteryear. The Big Lamp brewery was established in 1982 and now supplies a range of fine ales to pubs across the UK, as well as within The Keelman’s bar, producing around 40 barrels per week, around a third of which are used by the Keelman.

It also has a large conservatory, overlooking a patio.
The Keelman & Big Lamp Brewery also comes with accommodation within Keelmans Lodge and Salmon Cottage, providing 14 bedrooms in two buildings set within the grounds. The Keelman’s Lodge includes six en-suite family rooms while Salmon Cottage has eight en-suite letting rooms, each with king size beds and Juliet balconies.
David Cash, regional director at Christie & Co’s Newcastle office, said: “The freehold interest of The Keelman & Big Lamp Brewery is owned by the pension fund of two semi-retired, local businessmen, who ultimately wish to fully retire and realise the worth of their asset, which they built up from an unused water pumping station some 30 years ago.
“With multiple income streams by way of wet, dry and accommodation sales, The Keelman has it all and presents an attractive prospect for an experienced operator. Sat on a 1.7 acre site, there is also significant scope for further development/expansion.”
The Keelman & Big Lamp Brewery along with Keelmans Lodge & Salmon Cottage is available on a freehold basis at an asking price of £995,000. The owners may consider leasing the entire site to an experienced and ambitious operator on terms to be negotiated.
