Improving physcial and mental wellbeing with digital systems

The university’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) has recently launched a new programme to engage more than 600 business in the North of Tyne region to create an Internet of Caring Things market, supporting the development of new products, services and jobs.

The Internet of Caring Things is described as a network of digitally connected objects and systems that can actively care for people, their physical and mental wellbeing, and what really matters to them.

NICA – a world-leading organisation supported by an initial investment from UK Government and Newcastle University – exists to help co-develop and launch products and services that can support living better, for longer.

North East: A hub for batteries and electrification

A large, world-class ecosystem of manufacturing, research, and education is emerging in the region. Led by Newcastle University, the North East Battery Alliance is raising awareness of the North East as a leading hub for the battery industry and the drive to net zero.

Newcastle University is also leading a national network of four cutting-edge centres to enable faster collaborative research and development of power electronics, electric machines, and drives, which will be used in technologies such as cars, planes, and ships. The Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centres are backed by £28.5m Government funding and will provide open access facilities with state-of-the-art equipment, bringing together the UK’s technology and manufacturing expertise in electrification research and development.

Innovating through data

Growth in the volume of personal and professional data is raising huge new opportunities and challenges for organisations.

Based in The Catalyst within Newcastle Helix, the National Innovation Centre for Data is a beacon for data innovation, problem-solving, and creating value.

The centre is creating huge value for businesses in the region

The centre upskills organisations with cutting-edge data science skills to become more productive and gain actionable insights from their data.

Recent investment from the North of Tyne Combined Authority is enabling more than 200 companies across Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland to realise their data’s potential through a mix of activities, events, and collaborative skills projects.

Supporting regional SME’s

Part-funded through the European Regional Development Fund, Arrow has provided tailored innovation support to over 150 local small businesses. This includes research and development, proof of concept and validation, specialist data science expertise, and access to state-of-the-art research facilities. It can also access match funding to allow small and medium enterprises to buy in specialist services.

The Arrow programme provided data experts from the University to Newcastle-based software house, Nebula Labs, to support the launch of an innovative new transport monitoring system for their clients at Cobalt Business Park.
