A large parcel of land in north Birmingham earmarked for almost 1,000 new houses has been acquired. Housebuilder Bellway has bought the 123-acre site at Langley in Sutton Coldfield which it hopes will pave the way for a new development of 950 homes east of the town centre.
The site, acquired for an undisclosed sum from New Hall Estates, forms around a fifth of the wider Langley Sustainable Urban Extension area where there are plans to deliver up to 5,500 homes. An outline planning application for the wider site has already been submitted to Birmingham City Council and is under consideration.
The masterplan also includes the provision of more than 200 acres of public open space and the creation of new community facilities and schools, including up to three primary schools and a secondary school with sixth form. The project west of the A38 has not been without controversy after the former green belt land was declassified, with campaigners hoping to halt construction of the new homes at the rural site.

The Langley development land also sits next to the huge Peddimore industrial site on the other side of the major trunk road which is being regenerated to create new property aimed at companies looking to open major warehousing and logistics facilities.
James Turner, land director for Bellway West Midlands, said: “This site represents a significant investment for Bellway in the region and is expected to be one of the largest residential land deals in the Midlands this year which will bring positive economic benefit to the region with improvements in infrastructure and job creation.
“Our plans as part of the wider Langley Sustainable Urban Extension will be an extremely significant scheme in the Birmingham area over the coming years and a great deal of care and attention has gone into the proposals to ensure that these homes are delivered in a sustainable way with both residents and the surrounding area in mind.
“When completed, Langley will form a purpose-built neighbourhood of approximately 14,000 residents and will be integrated into the existing infrastructure in the town with two new junctions created off the A38, allowing a seamless extension to the town.
“We are pleased to be working alongside Bellway Strategic Land to deliver what will be a high-class addition to available housing in Sutton Coldfield, helping to meet the demand for 51,000 new homes to be delivered in the Birmingham area by 2031, as outlined in the Birmingham Development Plan.”
