Bovis Homes owner to build on Birmingham hospital site

The owner of Bovis Homes has been chosen to deliver a major new housing estate on the site of a Birmingham hospital.

Vistry Group has won the brief from Homes England to build 750 houses on the City Hospital site, in Dudley Road, Winson Green.

The hospital is being replaced by the Midland Metropolitan Hospital in nearby Smethwick which is due for completion in the near future following years of delays, caused in large part by the collapse of previous contractor Carillion in 2018.

The £196.5 million development will have apartments and townhouses ranging from one to four bedrooms.

The site, currently owned by Homes England and occupied by the NHS Trust, has outline planning permission for 750 homes, including the conversion of the historic infirmary frontage into 40 apartments.

A total of 35 per cent of the 750 properties will be classed as affordable homes and the remainder will be a mix of open market, rent only and extra affordable housing alongside 8,000 sq ft reserved for commercial and community space.

Phil McHugh, managing director of Vistry North West Midlands, said: “We are thrilled to have secured this highly coveted scheme to build 750 much-needed, mixed-tenure homes in Birmingham.

“We feel privileged to add City Hospital to our West Midlands portfolio.

“This development will not only meet the housing needs of the area but will bring both regeneration and valuable investment into the city while creating a thriving and sustainable community for the future.”
