Fat Boar pub group has taken on Ruthin restaurant site

A pub group has taken on a North Wales restaurant site that closed over the pandemic.

On the Hill in Ruthin shut over the Covid crisis with the owners setting up an outside catering and home delivery service.

Now though the restaurant will reopen under the Fat Boar brand after the pub group took on the site.

They will revamp the building to fit with their style before opening.

Fat Boar owner Rich Watkin said: “The restaurant was up for sale and we made an offer two months ago and have now picked up the keys, which is pretty quick.

“The building is in a very good condition as it’s been well maintained but we will make some changes to make it fit with the way we operate.

“We will draw up those plans in the next couple of weeks, we aren’t putting a timeline on when we’ll open as we want to get this right rather than rush and bodge it.”

He added: “It’s slightly smaller than our current sites but we still think we’ll have 10 full time and 10 part time staff here so that is another boost for the area.”

Rich said he thought Ruthin was a good fit with the Fat Boar brand and said they were ambitious about the expanding further.

But he added: “We won’t jump into taking a site, with this we will have opened three places in seven years so we don’t rush into anything.

“There isn’t a target to open sites but if a site is right, like this one, then we’ll look at it.”

Their existing sites have been hugely successful and they are rebounding well from hospitality lockdowns – as well as opening a function venue at Maesgwyn Hall in Wrexham.

Rich added: “People have been great and Christmas is already looking really good.”
