Lidl has published plans to open 140 stores across the country over the next two years, with over half of its preferred new site locations in the South West.
The supermarket, which has over 860 stores and 13 distribution centres across the UK, has opened over 20 new stores since the start of this year of a planned 50, creating 2,000 jobs.
Lidl says it has committed to investing £1.3bn in its store expansion over 2021 and 2022, as it seeks to reach a target of 1,000 UK stores by 2023.
The European grocery chain has now published a list of places it would like to develop or relocate its new stores, with it prioritising town centre, edge-of-centre, retail park and metropolitan locations this year.
Christian Härtnagel, Lidl GB chief executive said: “We are calling on developers and landlords up and down the country to help find potential sites for us to build Lidl stores, which demonstrates the continued ambition we have to further expand our store portfolio across the nation.
“Despite the challenges of the past year, we still managed to meet our ambitious target of opening, on average, one new store per week across Great Britain.
“We are looking forward to opening more stores throughout the country and welcoming new colleagues in the coming months and years, so that more communities can access high quality food at the lowest prices on the market.”
Lidl said all of its proposed new stores would feature bakery sections and environmentally sustainable features, such as solar panels to provide renewable energy and electric vehicle charging points.
Here is the full list of South West locations where Lidl has expressed an interest in developing a new store.
