East Yorkshire-based Premier Modular has been awarded multi-million-pound contracts to support the build-out of HS2.

The off-site construction specialist is now providing project offices and welfare facilities for 15 locations along the first phase of the high-speed line, linking London and Birmingham.

More than 15,000 sq m of buildings made up of more than 500 bespoke modules will be manufactured at the Brandesburton site before being transported south for use on the 26.4 km of development closest to the southern terminus at Euston.

Awarded by the Skanska Costain Strabag joint venture, the contract will see facilities featuring open plan offices, meeting rooms, break-out spaces, showers, drying rooms, toilets, first aid rooms, and canteens delivered. All will be completed this year.

“Our aim is to provide the best quality office and welfare facilities in the construction sector. We were able to offer building solutions to SCS to suit a wide range of sites. On each project we are working to short programmes and on some highly constrained sites near to live railway lines.

“We have invested £12 million in our hire fleet in the last 12 months and have expanded our workforce with an additional 100 people in the same period to meet the rising demand for our building services. The scale of the HS2 projects for Premier is a significant factor in that investment.”

Each site is being installed complete with low energy lighting, air conditioning, fire and security alarms, toilets, partitions, and doors.

They will be in use for at least five years, and sustainability features will include rainwater harvesting to aid site operations.

The contract comes just months after Premier was bought out by London investment house Cabot Square, in the midst of a major period of growth. It has since acquired a business Cabot was also invested in, NetZero Buildings. It follows work on hospital capacity expansions and trsting centre roll-out during the Covid pandemic.

John Harrison, section lead construction manager at SCS, said, “Premier has developed the most cost-effective building solutions that met our requirements and budget. Their team has been very flexible, adapting the designs to our changing needs, and with a strong emphasis on customer care.”

SCS’s contract will involve the construction of a variety of structures and 21km of the line will be in a tunnel created using six tunnel boring machines.

Skanska was part of the contracting team behind the recently completed and world-leading gas pipeline tunnelled under the River Humber.
