Digital packaging specialist Springfield Solutions has embarked on its largest expansion in almost 50 years, creating 12 new jobs and creating the potential for more.

The Hull-based business is doubling the size of its logistics footprint, with a further 4,000 sq ft of neighbouring space taken on, while investing in a fifth and six printing press and other equipment to enhance capacity.

Project 21 has been unveiled as the company seeks to sustain the growth it has delivered in the past three years, since a business development team was established to aid its brand management and printed media provision.

Matt Dass, joint managing director, said: “At the end of 2018, we set out our plan on how we intended to grow the business. Following investment in new buildings, equipment and people in 2016 and 2017, we knew the time was right to start telling people about how we create digital packaging assets for the way we live today and the way we will live tomorrow.

“The business has seen double digit growth in every year since our plans in 2018. Now it’s time to set out our new plan. Project 21 will see the largest investment in people, equipment and buildings that the business has ever made, and I’m thrilled to be part of a team who will deliver the next chapter in the history of Springfield.”

Adjacent units spanning 4,000 sq ft have been added, opening this month, providing the capacity needed now and also future-proofing.

The equipment comes as it prepares to build on the 187 million labels produced in 2020.

It played a key role in the coronavirus response, rapidly turning round labels for hand sanitiser as new business was won off incredible reaction times, leading to a shortlisting at the HullLive Business Awards.

Vice chairman, Steve Forster, added: “Since joining Springfield 38 years ago, I have seen the business grow immensely. Today, I am looking at a business that is going through its largest growth period to date, thanks to this fantastic team. We are seeing increased business and a higher production capacity on top of new production techniques.

“One of our biggest achievements is Springfield’s reputation, which has grown substantially over the recent years even through the unprecedented Covid period. Project 21 is our platform for the future.”

Springfield, based in Thomas Street, employs 82 people at present, with 16 in sister marketing company Eon Visual Media.
