A US software giant has co-launched an apprenticeship programme for young professionals in the West of England as part of efforts to attract more people from diverse backgrounds into the tech sector.
Digital banking firm NCR, previously known as the National Cash Register, is set to recruit apprentices without a university degree to its professional services team over the coming months.
The scheme, which is a collaboration between NCR and Multiverse education tech startup Multiverse, will see 50 apprentices taken on, with around 20 from Bristol and Bath – where it has an office – and the remainder from London.
Apprentices will receive training in data and digital skills, with 30 enrolled into a digital business accelerator program and 20 on a degree-level advanced data fellowship.
The data apprentices will learn to design and build dashboards, conduct research and generate new analysis and models. The business apprentices will work with consultants to learn varied skills including data analytics, but also the operation of a business and different business models.

Jeremy Duggan, president of Multiverse, said: “Professional apprenticeships offer a unique and exciting way for great companies to invest in their workforces and develop leaders of the future. It’s brilliant to see yet another world-class employer further extending their recruitment of high-quality, non-graduate talent.”
Ismail Amla, NCR’s executive vice president for professional services, added: “We are excited to grow our future talent as NCR continues its strategy to accelerate growth in consulting and services.
“We fully expect this to be only the first of many intakes of apprentices through this program and we will continue to grow this base of young talent in addition to the recruitment to our graduate program.”
